Understanding the Major Arcana: A Beginner's Tarot Guide
What Is the Major Arcana?
The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards numbered 0 through 21. These cards represent life’s karmic and spiritual lessons — the big themes, turning points, and transformative experiences that shape who we become.
Unlike the Minor Arcana (which deals with daily events), the Major Arcana speaks to deep, universal human experiences.
Step 1: The Fool’s Journey (Cards 0–7)
The Major Arcana tells a story called The Fool’s Journey — a metaphor for the path through life.
- 0 The Fool — new beginnings, innocence, leap of faith
- I The Magician — manifestation, resourcefulness, willpower
- II The High Priestess — intuition, mystery, inner knowledge
- III The Empress — abundance, nurturing, creativity
- IV The Emperor — structure, authority, stability
- V The Hierophant — tradition, spiritual wisdom, conformity
- VI The Lovers — love, choices, alignment of values
- VII The Chariot — determination, willpower, victory
“Every great journey begins with the Fool’s first step into the unknown.”
Step 2: The Middle Journey (Cards 8–14)
These cards represent the lessons of maturity and inner strength:
- VIII Strength — courage, patience, inner power
- IX The Hermit — soul-searching, introspection, guidance
- X Wheel of Fortune — cycles, destiny, turning points
- XI Justice — fairness, truth, cause and effect
- XII The Hanged Man — surrender, new perspective, letting go
- XIII Death — transformation, endings, renewal (not literal death)
- XIV Temperance — balance, moderation, patience
Step 3: The Deep Lessons (Cards 15–21)
The final cards address the deepest spiritual challenges and ultimate fulfillment:
- XV The Devil — bondage, materialism, shadow self
- XVI The Tower — sudden change, upheaval, revelation
- XVII The Star — hope, renewal, serenity
- XVIII The Moon — illusion, fear, the subconscious
- XIX The Sun — joy, success, vitality
- XX Judgement — rebirth, inner calling, absolution
- XXI The World — completion, integration, accomplishment
Step 4: Reading Major Arcana Cards
When Major Arcana cards appear in a reading, pay special attention:
- Multiple Major Arcana in one reading suggests you’re going through a significant life phase
- Reversed cards may indicate blocked energy or internalized lessons
- The card’s position in the spread affects its specific meaning
- Consider both the traditional meaning and your intuitive response
Step 5: Starting Your Practice
Begin with a single-card daily draw:
- Shuffle while focusing on your question or intention
- Draw one card
- Study the imagery — what stands out to you?
- Read the traditional meaning
- Journal about how it connects to your day
Over time, you’ll develop a personal relationship with each card that goes beyond textbook definitions. The Major Arcana becomes a mirror for your own journey through life.
